Great News: France and the US Both Allow Dual Citizenship
Americans who become French citizens do not have to renounce their US citizenship. The United States government recognizes dual citizenship, even if it doesn't formally encourage it. France does not require you to renounce your American nationality. You can hold both passports and enjoy all rights in both countries.
Eligibility Requirements for French Naturalization
- 5 years of continuous legal residency in France (3 years if you have a French degree from a recognized institution, or if your non-French spouse is French)
- B1 French language level (minimum) — assessed via a DELF B1 certificate or interview with préfecture official. Higher level (B2, C1) strengthens your application
- Integration into French society — you must demonstrate knowledge of French history, culture, values, and rights/duties of citizens
- Good moral character — no serious criminal record in either France or the US. French authorities check both countries.
- Sufficient income — you must be financially self-sufficient. No specific amount defined but must not be dependent on social welfare.
- Loyalty to France — you must not have committed acts contrary to French interests or values
The Application Process
- Apply at your local préfecture (or sub-préfecture in some areas). Some departments now use ANEF for initial application.
- Prepare an extensive dossier: 5 years of residency permits, tax returns, payslips, rental leases/proof of address, civil status documents (birth certificate, marriage certificate if applicable), professional credentials
- All non-French documents must be translated by a traducteur assermenté (sworn translator) — including your US birth certificate and any US legal documents
- Interview with a préfecture official — conducted in French. They assess your language level and integration.
- Security check by the Ministry of Interior and intelligence services — this is normal and can take 12–18 months
- Decision: naturalization by decree. If approved, ceremony at préfecture with signing of the Charte des droits et devoirs du citoyen français
- Average total timeline: 18–36 months from application to ceremony
